Saud Shakeel: A Rising Leader in the Test Arena

Saud Shakeel to become Test Captain of Pakistan Test Team

PCB Likely to Replace Shan Masood as Test Captain: Saud Shakeel Emerges as Strong Contender

 May 15, 2025

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is likely to make a major leadership change in red-ball cricket. According to sources, Shan Masood may be removed as Test captain ahead of Pakistan’s home series against South Africa in October 2025.

Shan Masood’s Captaincy Under Pressure

Shan took over as Test captain in November 2023. Since then, Pakistan has struggled in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023–25. Out of 12 Tests, the team won only three and lost nine. As a result, Pakistan now sits in ninth place on the WTC table.

The team faced whitewashes against Australia, Bangladesh, and South Africa. While wins came against Sri Lanka and England, a drawn series with the West Indies did little to inspire confidence. Clearly, concerns around Shan’s leadership and tactics continue to grow.

Saud Shakeel Gains Momentum

On the other hand, Saud Shakeel has gained attention as a strong candidate for the role. Since his Test debut, he has shown consistency in the middle order. He averages over 50 and remains calm under pressure.

More importantly, Saud led the Quetta Gladiators in PSL 10 and took them to the top of the table. His team won six out of nine matches. His performance as captain showed maturity and solid game awareness — both qualities PCB values.

A Broader Test Cricket Revamp

The leadership change is part of a wider plan. PCB is also considering changes to the Test coaching staff. The goal is to rebuild the team’s identity and improve red-ball results.

Officials believe that Saud can balance individual form with team leadership. His steady rise in performance and calm personality make him an ideal long-term option.

What Lies Ahead

Pakistan will host South Africa in October for two Tests, three ODIs, and three T20Is. PCB is expected to announce any leadership changes well before the series begins. This will give the new captain time to prepare.

For now, Saud Shakeel appears to be the top contender. However, the final decision rests with the PCB — and the clock is ticking.
